An extensive extended cruise circling the Land Down Under has been cancelled in the wake of the fatal incident of an older lady who was abandoned by the ship on a isolated island.

Suzanne Rees had been walking on the remote island with shipmates from the cruise ship, but separated from the excursion for a rest. The liner departed without her and returned after some time after the ship staff discovered the passenger was not present.

A major hunt discovered her remains the next day.

Authorities are investigating the tragedy, alongside law enforcement and the state coroner.

Chief Executive of the voyage organizer stated that guests and personnel on the Coral Adventurer were informed that the continuation of the voyage had been terminated due to the "tragic passing and previous technical problems".

Through an announcement, he added that guests would be provided a complete reimbursement, and said the organization was working "to coordinate the travel back of the individuals via private aircraft".

Officials also released an revised statement, and said they had "delivered a notice to the Commander" preventing any new passengers from entering the liner.

The representative said that they would visit the vessel in Cairns upon its arrival.

Timeline of Incidents

The liner initially left the Australian port on October 24th, and was merely two days into the expedition at the time of the 80-year-old's passing. Lizard Island was the opening port on the itinerary.

Passengers on the ship - who typically pay large sums of money to participate in the cruise - were transported there for a shore visit with the option of trekking or snorkelling.

Family Response

The daughter of the elderly passenger said that her loved ones was "stunned and grieved that the liner left the island after an organised tour without my parent".

Via her announcement, she described her parent as an "active octogenarian" who was a member of a bushwalking group.

"According to scant facts we have been informed, it looks that there was a failure of care and basic judgment," she said.

She further stated that she hoped the investigation would be able to identify what "the operator should have done that might have protected Her being".

"Based on information from the police that it was a very hot period, and she took sick on the hill climb," she stated.

"Officials suggested her to head down, without accompaniment. Then the boat left, reportedly without performing a roll call.

"At some stage in that process, or soon after, she died, alone."

Organization Position

Via official communication, the CEO verified that the organization was "collaborating extensively with officials to aid their investigation".

He said that the firm was "very regretful that this has happened" and had extended its total backing to the family.

Maritime Business Procedures

The vessel serves up to a hundred twenty passengers with forty-six staff, according to corporate details. It was specially constructed to access remote regions of the nation's coastline and is outfitted with "auxiliary vessels" - minor craft used to transport passengers on shore trips.

Occurrences like this are uncommon, and liners have protocols to record which passengers are embarking or disembarking, according to maritime specialists.

"Going ashore secretly or [back] aboard just isn't an option," one expert commented.

Shipping companies regard these procedures with great importance and have "advanced technology in place to avoid such occurrences from happening," the specialist further stated.

"This is presumably a shocking - and sad - one-off."
